This repair was made in Hickory, Nc. The homeowner had a leak, because the roofers laid the shingles on top of the chimney flashing. This is a no-no. there should be one piece of step flashing for every shingle, then counter flashing over all step flashing. to insure a waterproof union, between the chimney & shingles. The shingles had to be removed, and the felt underlayment, to inspect the extent of the damage to the roof sheathing. They were lucky that there wasn't any major rot.
